What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a cap that covers a tooth with a healthy root but is no longer structurally sound. If you live in the Las Vegas area, Nevada Dental Esthetics can help if you suspect you need a dental crown.
Crowns are used when there is a crack in the tooth's surface, or too much tooth is missing for a regular filling. Crowns completely cover the visible area of a tooth, creating a brand-new outer surface.
What Are The Different Types of Dental Crowns?
There are three common types of crowns that we use in our offices:
- All-Porcelain Crowns: This type of crown is the most popular due to its natural appearance. It does not contain metal and blends very well with natural teeth. Porcelain crowns are durable, but you must ensure they do not chip because they do not contain metal.
- Gold Crowns: A gold crown may be used if appearance is not a concern, such as with back molars. These crowns are very durable and provide a good surface for chewing, but they do not look like natural teeth.
- Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crowns: Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns have a metal lining, which gives strength, and a porcelain exterior, which allows for a natural appearance. The one issue with this type of crown is that, over time, a black line may appear at the gum line. This happens when the gums recede and reveal the edge of the metal lining.
Dental Crowns - Before & After
What Is The Dental Crown Process?
Each type of crown is placed basically the same way, and two visits are needed.
- First Visit: Dr. Paez will take an impression or mold of the affected tooth and send it to one of the best dental labs in the country, where the crown will be custom-made for you.
- He will fit a temporary crown until the permanent crown is placed about two weeks later. You and Dr. Paez can discuss the color of the crown and the porcelain used to make it. It's important to choose a qualified and experienced cosmetic dentist who can closely match the color of your crown to the color of your surrounding teeth.
- Second Visit: Dr. Paez attaches the dental crown. He will first fit it with a non-permanent cement to ensure it is comfortable and has the right color, size, and shape. If all is right, permanent cement is applied, the crown is placed on top, and a special light is used to cure or harden the cement.
What Is a Dental Bridge?
If you have missing teeth, you increase the risk of further disease, decay, and shifting teeth. Dr. Paez can help you restore your teeth and smile with dental bridges.
At Nevada Dental Esthetics, we understand how missing teeth can affect your self-esteem and all aspects of your life, and we want to help. During your free consultation, Dr. Paez will discuss your tooth replacement options.
What Are The Different Types of Dental Bridges?
A dental bridge is a false tooth suspended between two other teeth via crowns. It is permanent and not removable like dentures.
There are several different types of dental bridges. Dr. Paez will discuss the following options during your initial consultation:
- Traditional Fixed Bridge: Held in place with crowns on either side of the false tooth.
- Resin Bonded Bridge: Typically used on the front teeth, which don't require the same biting power as other teeth. A resin-bonded bridge, also known as a "Maryland bridge," does not require any damage to surrounding healthy teeth. The false tooth is held in place with a metal band affixed to the surrounding teeth with a resin.
- Cantilever Bridge: Used when the missing tooth has no neighboring tooth on one side. The false tooth is secured to two adjacent teeth on the other side, like a cantilevered balcony.

How Is A Traditional Fixed Bridge Placed?
You will need only two visits to Dr. Paez's office.
Dr. Paez will prepare your adjacent teeth for the crowns by removing a small amount of enamel. He will then take an impression, or mold, of your mouth, which will be sent to the dental lab that custom-creates the bridge.
You will be fitted with a temporary bridge for two weeks before your second visit. Dr. Paez will then fit the custom bridge into place, positioning the crowns over the two neighboring teeth and adjusting the fit as necessary. He will then cement the bridge permanently in place.
FAQs
How Long Will My Crown or Bridge Last?
Dental crowns and bridges' lifespans vary depending on oral hygiene, materials, and daily habits. On average:
- Dental crowns last 10 to 15 years but can last 20 years or longer with excellent care.
- Dental bridges last 5 to 15 years, but some remain functional for up to 20 years with proper maintenance.
How Can I Help My Crown or Bridge Last Longer?
Here are some simple steps you can take to extend your crown or bridge's lifespan:
- Brush and floss daily to maintain good oral hygiene.
- Avoid chewing hard foods or ice or using teeth as tools.
- Attend regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings.
Dr. Paez may recommend a replacement to prevent complications if a crown or bridge becomes loose, damaged, or worn down.
Can a Dental Bridge or Crown Be Repaired if It Gets Damaged?
Yes, a dental bridge or crown can sometimes be repaired if it gets damaged. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind:
- Small chips or cracks: If the crown or bridge has a small chip or crack, Dr. Paez may be able to repair it using a composite resin or dental bonding.
- Severe fractures or wear: Repair might not be possible in these cases. A replacement could be a better option.
If the underlying or supporting teeth are damaged, Dr. Paez may need to treat them before placing a new crown or bridge.
How Do I Handle a Loose Dental Crown or Bridge?
If a crown or bridge feels loose, take action quickly to prevent further complications. Here's what you should do:
- Avoid Chewing on That Side: This will minimize pressure and prevent the tooth from detaching completely or damaging the underlying surface.
- Check for Food Debris: Sometimes, food particles can get trapped around a bridge or crown, making it feel loose. Gently floss around the area to see if that resolves the issue.
- Do Not Attempt to Reattach It Yourself: Avoid using glue or over-the-counter dental adhesives. They can cause more damage or lead to infection.
- Keep the Crown or Bridge in Place If Possible: If the restoration is still partially attached, leave it and avoid wiggling it.
- Contact Dr. Paez Immediately: A loose crown or bridge can indicate cement failure, underlying decay, or a structural issue. He will assess the situation and either:
- Re-cement the existing restoration if the supporting tooth is healthy.
- Replace the crown or bridge if it's damaged or the tooth underneath needs treatment.
What Foods Should I Avoid After Getting a Dental Crown or Bridge?
After getting a dental crown or bridge, be mindful of your diet, especially in the first few days, to ensure proper healing and long-term durability.
Immediately after the procedure (the first 24-48 hours), avoid:
- Sticky foods: Caramel, taffy, and chewing gum can pull the crown or bridge out of place.
- Hard foods: Nuts, ice, and hard candies may crack or damage the restoration.
- Crunchy foods: Popcorn, raw vegetables, and chips can pressure the crown or bridge.
- Chewy foods: Steak, bagels, and dried fruit can stress the restoration and underlying tooth.
- Extremely hot or cold foods and drinks: They may trigger sensitivity as your teeth adjust.
Even after the initial healing period, it's also helpful to limit foods that can weaken or damage your restoration, such as:
- Sugary foods and drinks: Soda, candy, and pastries can contribute to decay around the crown or bridge.
- Acidic foods: Citrus fruits and vinegar-based dressings may wear down the protective surface of the restoration over time.
- Ice or hard candies: Biting down on hard objects can crack or dislodge the crown or bridge.
